Took a stroll around the perimeter and something colorful caught my eye. There – discretely propped against a generator close to the community garden – was this little gem.
A slate grey chip – about four inches across painted with flowers. Someone went to the trouble of making this and planting it in the wild. And now I am curious.
So channeling my inner Claudia McGill*, I went out yesterday and put this in its place which of course I just happened to have sitting in a box waiting for deployment.
Will keep you informed of any breathless developments on the walking rock exchange front.
*Claudia is a most prolific and endlessly creative poet, artist, blogger who has a habit of creating little tiles that she plants when out walking. See here and here.
Hello Josie Thanks for sharing this idea about rock.

This is so lovable! You are as brave as whimsical. I do hope the first artist didn’t just plant the rock and keep on going. I’m hoping for a return, the surprised and delighted discovery, the ensuing conversation. Shall be watching this spot for developments! — Elizabeth
I found another one yesterday! A round gray stone with a light grey peace sign cunningly tucked into the mulch around a newly planted tree. I shall replace that one too. The game’s afoot!
Hi Josie,
Love these painted rocks… You may be interested in Rocks of Swindon (home town does good). I was last there in 2018, and kept seeing painted rocks wherever we walked. Charming designs. Here’s the Facebook page

Thanks for the link Martin. And Lydiard Park as well. Back in the day – when it was a wild and untamed place – it was my personal adventure playground.
And cheers to you.
Thanks for the mention. I love hearing about these exchanges whenever and wherever they happen and your rock will catch someone’s eye and make them happy, whether they pick it up or not, I know it!
What a great idea! It’s like a big secret, something we all want to follow!
