What Is Revealed
As snow
recedes in spring,
fall reveals its secrets.
Black walnuts,
gossamer milkweed,
woolly bears
on their epic treks
across the road
in search of winter hiding.
A dry stone wall,
an abandoned hornets’ nest—
grey, its paper rooms
still whole,
untenanted.

A way through the woods opens—
and there,
the red barn, its weathered planks
leaning into late light.
Behind the trees
a small pond surfaces,
and shadow carves
dark trunks
on bright grass.

A poem revised in response to an invitation from Marion Horton at W3#205 hosted by The Skeptic’s Kaddish to explore the theme: Beneath the Surface. It is a disqualifying three lines over the limit but I hope you enjoy it nevertheless.

Josie, I feel like this really captures that quiet moment when things start to show themselves again after being hidden. I love it.

How could this ever be disqualified? A gorgeous poem Josie. I just love the images – poetic and photographic. ‘ Shadow carves/dark trunks/on bright grass’ ❤️

The PoW sets the rules. And I think it is only respectful to follow them. To say that something does not qualify in no way diminishes it.

It certainly doesn’t. 😊
