I’ve been reading Tell Me a Story Where the Bad Girl Wins: The Life and Art of Barbara Shermund
It’s a biography and art collection by Caitlin McGurk celebrating the pioneering cartoonist Barbara Shermund who drew for The New Yorker and Esquire.
More on that anon.
Here’s a seasonal cartoon from Barbara Shermund from 1958

I won’t be eating turkey on Thursday but whether you are giving thanks or bearing grudges, celebrating or not, I hope you have a great day.
The morning started with this amazing city sunrise

Then it was across the park to the Guggenheim on 5th Avenue. The hawk posing at the playground on the north west corner of Central Park flashed its red tail as it flew off.

Thank you — I knew nothing about Munter, and now I have seen some of her great paintings. I love her use of colour!
Thanks Craig – For a better introduction take a look at this excellent post: Gabriele Münter at the Guggenheim https://prufrocksdilemma.wordpress.com/2025/11/28/gabriele-munter-at-the-guggenheim/
Both women look spaced out and the carpet is levitating.
Well that’s “art” for you innit.
The sunrise photo is wonderful. I thought it was a painting. The Red-tail, a descendant of Pale Male, perhaps? I followed that magnificent fellow on line for years.
That amazing sunrise is a completely untouched photo taken with my phone this morning. What a way to start the day! I had the blinds closed and all of a sudden this bright blood-red light was pouring through the slats.
As for the hawk, i can only say this: i frequently see red-tails soaring over Morningside Park. So – if they are direct relatives of Pale Male and mate – then they were most prolific.
Joyful start to any day with world class art galleries and museum with a leg stretch thru Central Park. Certainly a day for which to give thanks..and no Turkey hurt in the making
Thanks Dierj. It was a joyful start to a good day.
Of course – to be equal-handed about it – we do need to set aside a designated time for holding grudges and ill-will amid all this excess of unproductive gratitude and thankfulness.
