The single sex fad

It’s good to see some counter viewpoints to the recent spate of publicity promoting single-sex education as the panacea for what ails education and schooling. This short piece from Slate raises the good questions about some of the support for the single sex agenda. Like all quick fixes this fad is not the cure-all solution. There are many good single-sex institutions but reasons for their existence should not be based on gender stereotyping and simplistic, essentialist learning theory (boys think and act like this, girls think and act like that.) Not to mention, of course, that dividing people by sex runs counter to notions of diversity, and the importance of appreciating difference and multiple perspectives. For a little deeper exploration and insight try these booknotes on resources at Harvard Educational Publishing Group.
